THE ESTERPORT FLEET: A SHIP SYSTEM PREVIEW

Admiral Toilan of Esterport has opened the city's warships to volunteer crews to drive back the Nazedha pirates raiding the coast. Each ship is sailed by one of the admiral's captains, with a hand to work the sails.

Everything else is up to you:
- man the ballistae and catapults
- haul ammunition up from the magazine
- patch her hull
- fight her fires and keep her afloat

IMPORTANT
Highly recommended, if you are a Mudlet user, to enter this command in-game:
   get_ship_map

This will install a floating window that will capture output from the ship map for you.

GETTING ABOARD
Go to the Esterport docks at v80843:
SHIP LIST See which of the admiral's ships are moored.
SHIP BOARD <ship> Climb aboard (by name or number).
SHIP DISEMBARK Step back onto the pier (only while docked).

Each ship takes a fighting crew of five. If the bosun turns you away, board another ship; more are made ready as volunteers arrive.

NAVIGATION
SHIP LOOK The sea chart around the ship.
SHIP STATUS Hull, fittings and what is manned.
SHIP The list of crew commands you can use here.

The top edge of the chart names why it was drawn (--- LOOK ---, --- MOVEMENT ---, --- PROJECTILE --- and so on), for those who capture it with triggers.
Each fitting (ballista, catapult, magazine, helm...) has its own room aboard the ship layout.

WORKING THE WEAPONS
  1. Go to the magazine and draw ammunition (you can carry five):
SHIP AMMO FETCH bolt <amount> bolts for a ballista
SHIP AMMO FETCH firebomb <amount> firebombs for a catapult

  2. Go to a weapon and take your post:
       SHIP MAN

  3. Load, aim and loose:
SHIP LOAD bolt (or SHIP LOAD firebomb at a catapult)
SHIP TARGETING This weapon's arc and the targets it can hit.
SHIP FIRE <target> Loose at a pirate by name, or by the id TARGETING shows, e.g. SHIP FIRE #3

  4. SHIP UNMAN when you leave the post, so someone else can take it.

A ballista swivels to cover one quarter of the sea around the ship:
SHIP ROTATE FORWARD | PORT FORWARD | PORT | STARBOARD FORWARD | STARBOARD

If TARGETING shows nothing, swing your ballista toward the pirates.
A firebomb catapult throws over the bow and to either side, but only a short way; its bombs set the enemy alight. Bolts and bombs take time to fly, and a moving ship is hard to hit.

REPAIRS
SHIP REPAIR HULL Patch the hull (also SHIP JURYRIG HULL). Patches only hold her up to half strength.
SHIP REPAIR FITTING Patch a damaged fitting in your room.
SHIP BAIL Heave floodwater overboard. Take a bucket from the stern and WIELD BUCKET first.

  - Every hit lets more of the sea in. Left to rise, the water slows her and at last drags her under, so keep someone bailing.
  - Fires: if you know Survival's Dousing, take a bucket from the stern, FILL BUCKET WITH WATER and DOUSE FIRE. Nobody else will.

THE CAPTAIN
  - Listen for the captain's yells: he calls the pirates, fires and rising water, and the hints that follow tell you what to do about them.
  - When she is taking too much water the captain turns the ship for Esterport, and the pirates give chase: keep patching and keep shooting until she makes fast in harbour.

ABANDON SHIP
If she is sinking past saving, the captain orders the boats cut loose.
SHIP ABANDON Take a lifeboat and row for the pier.
Anyone still aboard when she goes down goes down with her.
