The Sermons of Alhazrad IV - Faith

Written by: Lord Rijetta Alhazrad, Kivodo wo Hikda

Addressed to: Everyone

Are mortals constructed of naught but Body, Mind, Soul, and Blood? Nay - there is a fifth component, more important than any other: Faith. To be faithless is to be empty, and to be faithful is to be righteous. Faith is that which drives the truest purpose, and faith is that which inspires the least to greatness, and the greatest to ruin. It is faith that drives the peasant's dagger twixt the King's ribs. It is faith which slays the monster. It is faith which ends the hero.

And yet it is impossible to hold faith. Faith is not something one can acquire - faith is not something one has. These are misconceptions borne from weak priests and foolish preachers. One cannot have faith, for faith is impossibly far away, a standard none can meet, yet to which all are held. Faith lies at the end of the Righteous Path, and to grab hold of it is to lose it instantly, for you transcend it.

Thus it is that faith is eternally a lantern held before you, just out of reach. It lights the way, but beyond it you can see nothing. Without it, you are lost. Strive eternal for faith. Crawl, walk, run in its wake. Reach out your hands, grasping in desperation, and feel it brush your fingertip, never to be yours.

A God has no need of faith, for They are replete in Righteousness. Divine mandate grants Them grace; every action They take is correct and upright, one thousand stars aligning to rewrite fate at Their passing. Faith is the will-o-wisp of mortals, dragging them by the nose into foolish transcendence.

Reach for Heaven, for only there is faith found. Grasp it and cease to be.

Penned by my hand on Kinsday, the 14th of Niuran, in the year 506 MA.
