A Simple History Lesson

Since we are clearing misconceptions, I think it best that more of this
story be told. Allow me to enlighten the realm on just what has and is
occurring within the Magi guild.
Many years ago, the Magi were told to land their guildhall. There were
officially five choices on the referendum: Enorian, Bloodloch,
Spinesreach, Ashtan, and Durian. The Magi were, at the time, a Neutral
guild. Neutrality was our trademark and our thoughts were weighted
heavily upon it. Ashtan and Spinesreach were the two cities we believed
to be the best matches for us. They were still considered neutral forces
at the time and both had their scholarly aspects. Lord Galleus, who was
our Patron, however, informed our members that should we choose Ashtan,
we would need to find a new Patron to guide us. This was not a pleasant
idea to many of our members since they were those who resided within His
Order. At the time it did not seem like the choice of Spinesreach over
Ashtan would effect the guild overly much in any case and so it was that
the vote fell favorably on Spinesreach.
What came next, of course, was the grand entrance of the Bahkatu and the
Atabahi into the realms. Our world quickly began to become a bit more
polarized. Spinesreach became more famous for its undead than for its
books while Ashtan began to take action against those who were undead.
The choice to land in Spinesreach suddenly meant a lot more to the Magi,
but it the process of moving there had already begun and turning back,
we were told, was not an option.
Magi were allowed to live in any city they desired, as before, though
Spinesreach was to be the suggest city for seeking out citizenship. As
events throughout the realm became more, Spinesreach began to insist
that Magi not attack the city or the citizens. It was a reasonable
request considering the circumstances, but it meant the end of Magi
neutrality. Things did not end there however. The treaty was broken by
the city on numerous occasions without result. The Magi were blamed
again and again for the problems they had with the city. It was never
viewed as the fault of a citizen, always as the fault of a Magi.
As you can imagine, there was a good bit of unrest within the Magi
guild. Rather than growing stronger after our move to Spinesreach we had
begun to stagnate. The city cared only for controlling the guild, not
for the guild itself and this was felt by the members. The guild had
lost its Neutrality without being given the chance to decide which path
it would take. Thus was it proposed within our council that we consider
the option of leaving the city. There was much support of this and most
of what was said against it could be summed up in the idea that leaving
the city was impossible.
Since it was obvious that the need to prove that the move was indeed
possible in order to clear up this misconception, we went to Lord Slyphe
to ask what would be required for the move. We learned then that if the
guild truly wished to Change where we lived it would be possible,
however Lord Galleus would have to be replaced with Lord Slyphe as the
Patron or there was nothing that could be done. We eagerly reported this
news back to the council, surely now the guild would be allowed the
chance to decide for themselves what their future would be. This was
apparently not the case.
Before any discussion could be made on this new information, Parhelion
outguilded everyone who had spoken in favor of Change and numerous
others, setting them all as enemies of Spinesreach. The Sects devoted to
education were decimated, neither a Secretary nor Undersecretary left to
maintain them. Some old mages who hadnt been seen in ages were given the
boot. People not on the council to even know about the discussion taking
place were shown the door. The guild was left with a scant number of
full mages and almost no leadership. What is more, the council was
supposed to be a place where its members did not need to fear what they
said. They were protected there by Magi law; laws which Parhelion was
apparently exempt from or perhaps Amabelle feels are just easier not
bothering to enforce.
