The time to seek consultation with a midwife is not as the baby is being
born, but at least several months before that. By the time the delivery
is happening, it's too late for many of the best methods available to
midwives to prevent problems or prepare for them. Also, midwives often
have other responsibilities and might not be available at the moment of
emergency; but if they've been in consultation with you beforehand, they
can make sure to set aside time, or make other arrangements as
necessary. So please don't wait until the last minute.
