Rellyw

Greetings, Lucin.

As a fellow scholar, I understand your interest in pushing the
boundaries of current knowledge; and seeking to better understand things
that those of Ankyr understood well, such as Yggdrasil, is no doubt a
worthy goal. While I join you in hoping that we will learn much from
what is happening to the flame, I would not necessarily support the
pursuit of this greater understanding even to the destruction of this
wondrous creation. But that is an argument for another time.

My guildmates have already explained our guild's stance on this issue,
and so I will not go into that question. I write here instead as a
scholar of Ankyrean lore, and as such, to quarrel with your use of that
word, "rellyw".

You talk of the Ankyrean legacy, and great it indeed was. Perhaps the
creation of Yggdrasil could well be thought a crowning glory to their
myriad achievements. You do not invoke it admirably by using that word
to refer to those failing to follow your example in seeking greater
enlightenment. It is inappropriate for use in this era anyway, since it
was used by those of a different -race- to suggest the inferirority of
other mortal races. Since none of us are Ankyrean any more, none of us
even have grounds to use that word.

I am sad to find any think we have -reason- to use it, if not grounds. I
think your apparent meaning is misapplied, seeming, as it does, to
suggest that those finding other purposes in their lives but to seek
knowledge at, perhaps, any price, are inferior to those of a more
scholarly bent - a belief which I mean to do you credit, as I can not
believe you mean it quite in the way it once was used. In fact the word
translates as "pet" in our language, according to he who imparted it to
us. I hope you will agree with me that the suggestion that any who
aren't sharing your views on the flame are fit only to be lowly "pets"
to those who are, is grossly inappropriate, and is unworthy of you, my
fellow scholar, and fellow member of the Acumen Circle.

You are not the first I have heard to use this word, but I hope you will
be the last. Qeddwyn repeated it to us with such palpable shame on
behalf of his Order for so growing in arrogance as to apply it to their
fellow mortals, that I am surprised any who are now claiming to follow
the Order's legacy can bring themselves to use it. He named it as an
attitude that brought much trouble to the Order, and suggested that the
growth in arrogant superiority it signified to have been one of perhaps
many first steps in the demise of the Ankyr. None of you honour their
memory by resurrecting it, for any reason. If we seek to return their
legacy to Sapience, in some way, then we will do well to leave that part
of it very firmly behind, unless any truly seek to repeat their mistakes
as well.

I have no wish to attack you, a respected fellow scholar, but I must beg
that this word and its accompanying attitude be left to history and
memory.
