Response to the Great Hunt was phenomenal! During the month of Haernos,
we saw a total of 1,747 valid kills, 158 sketches, and 9 sketches, for a
total of 5,459 points amongst 29 contestants.
A slightly surprising twist in the fabric of Reality forced me to toss
away all vermin, but this affected many combatants more or less equally,
so it didn't really change the results. I also decided, after spending
several days poring over the scribbled lists (Jheranti needs to work on
his handwriting!), to award 5 bonus points to any contestant that didn't
offer a single kill that didn't count.
Some notes on things that we discovered. Quite a few people submitted
tamed animals such as steeds or even pet cats. There were also a lot of
undead things which I tossed out. Several plants probably should have
counted, but the wording of the rules I posted clearly said animals, so
I rejected them all. A handful of people submitted people like Arinas or
other sentient kills and sketches, which were rejected. One factor that
turned out to be a big one in scoring: people who thought to include
insects as animals got a lot of points off them.
Quite a few people who are definitely not newbies submitted
newbie-area-only animals. This distresses me because the idea is
supposed to be that the kills you submit are kills you made, or at least
were part of a team that made. If I run this again, the rules will be
clearer on that point. But since I didn't explicitly forbid it in the
original rules, I didn't reject these kills.
And without further ado, here are the results!

Huge congratulations go to Ravek for being our far-and-away winner! He
went to the ends of the earth, and found more than a few animals I
hadn't even heard of. But we shouldn't dismiss the efforts of our other
top scorers. I want to especially highlight Alendra, whose essays showed
a deep insight into the relationships of predator and prey, her own
place within the Rhythm, and the paths of Defiance and Severity.
Between entry fees and contributions (mostly from contestants), the
prize pool is as follows (not counting the "courtesy prizes" I'll be
giving to all entrants): 40,000 coins and 17 credits. Thus, the winners
will take:
Ravek: 18,000 coins, 10 credits
Yos: 9,000 coins, 5 credits
Rosalind: 5,000 coins, 2 credits
Wedric: 5,000 coins
Wildfire: 3,000 coins
I'll be distributing prizes as time and opportunity permit. I hope
everyone enjoyed the fun of the hunt and maybe learned a little bit
about the hunt along the way. Thanks to everyone who participated and
who helped make this happen, and especially to Jheranti!
