intellectual freedom

Written by: Dhasan Doktor Saltzmaul Geheimrat von Natterstein
Date: Monday, January 19th, 2004
Addressed to: Everyone

Revered Master Averroes, though formally adressed to everybody this
open letter is written especially for your attention. For years beyond
memory you have been spreading the true light of your vast and deep
knowledge and insight among the general population of Aetolia, even
as you held your abode within the walls of the city that calls itself
the Jewel. For all that time you have been left free to teach all of
the skills and knowledges that our world has to offer. It has always
been a great credit to said city that it offered you the intellectual
liberty to teach even those skills and knowledges that are generally
considered to be the domain of Darkness, such Necromancy, Sanguis
etcetera. Now a cold wind is blowing through the gilded streets that
you call home. As you have surely noticed, laws have been put in
place to purify them from the stains of all that is "impure" and
"unnatural". As I well know, it is always the feeling of those who
are in truth above to common crowd that they are immune to its
political and religious fads and follies. Unfortunately, this is
not the case. Revered Master Averroes, it is as a Dhasan of the City
of Spinesreach that I send you this message. If ever the Government of
the City of Shallam might decide to stifle you in the exercise of
intellectual freedom it would be an immense honour for me to
welcome you to the sanctuary of a City that devotes itself to the
pursuit of science in all of its aspects and fields, may they belong
to Light or Darkness, Nature or Artifice, War or the peaceful pursuit of
those fine arts that make our lives beautiful. Revered Master Averroes,
in the City of Spinesreach you will meet kindred minds that are not
consumed by the raging fires of religious fanaticism in one form
or another, but by a steadfast passion for logic and facts. We would be
looking forward so much to have you cooperate with the best minds that
we have ourselves, for the benefit of all Aetolians whatever the way
they look at life and death with no exceptions and limitations imposed
on what you teach and to whom. With the utmost reverence and respect
I hereby sign as Dhasan of Nature and Science,

Penned by my hand on the 15th of Lanosian, in the year 119 MA.
