Fertile Ground

Recent events have gotten me thinking, and frankly frightened, at what
fertile and rich soil corruption has to work with, even within those who
call themselves "good" or strive to serve life, light, and balance. It
has also made me aware of how simple it is to be coerced into paralysis,
threatened or swayed by public or political opinion, into the very
inaction that feeds and sustains the darkness and apathy that makes this
realm such a fertile ground for those who would steal away first your
liberty, then you laughter, and finally your life.
I have said before how lazy most evil is, how through their lack of
effort or forethought, or through only seeking their own selfish
desires, they allow harm to occur to those around them and in the long
term, to themselves. Not all evil is this way, but a great majority fall
in this catagory, unthinking, unfeeling, unreasoning beings who live for
the lowest and most base of desires, not willing or perhaps not
intelligent enough to appreciate the subtle and sublime existence that
we are a part of.
They lack a moral compass, or any sort of ethical standards, and shout
down and insult those who dare to speak up against their wrongs. Indeed,
this is one of their greatest weapons, and the way they further their
own darkness, by mocking and denigrating those who speak against them,
seeking to drive them to inaction by calling them hypocritical or worse,
covering their own lack of character or substance, by attacking those
who dare to hold up a mirror to them and show what emptiness they are
made of.
And by our inaction, we become party to their crimes, and we become no
better than they. Our silence and inactivity makes us accomplices to
their darkness, and enables them to continue to feed off the good
intentions of others and take advantage of those around them.
Is this the type of world we wish to live? A world sliding into darkness
and selfishness? Will we allow those who have no ideals, belittle ours
because we occasionally fail to live up to them, due to our being
imperfect beings? It is easy for they who have no strength and no
character, to criticise those who try and rise above our baser natures,
when the easier course is to sit back and do nothing unless it directly
affects us. It is their spite and jealousy at being shown what small and
cowardly beings they are, that they attack anyone who attempts to do a
good or altrustic act.
Indeed, it is abundantly clear, our realm is fertile ground for the
darkness of the spirit that seeks to subjagate and ultimately destroy
our individuality. I mourn for the realm.
