The Midnight Star

On a chilly Haernos day at the end of the autumn of 146, a stranger
walked into the main room of the Crystal Leaf Inn and began to solicit
drinks in return for stories. Soon, a crowd was gathered around him, and
Cheena was hard at work supplying the table with tequila and champagne
as the tale-teller introduced himself as Gennell the Elder.

Showing an extremely high tolerance against the effects of the alcohol,
Gennell asked his audience whether they knew of the fall of the
constellations some three decades earlier. When they named the three
surviving constellations, the elder recounted the legends behind them
and then divulged his theory on why the stars had not returned to the
sky; there were not enough legends known to base new constellations on.

Continuing to smoothly down tequila as it was given to him, Gennell sent
the interested listeners out into the world, to seek out people who
might have tales to tell that were worthy of being commemorated into the
sky. Soon they had heard hints of legends from Hycanthus and Elenina,
from Zaalun and Malyaln and Trabarg. When they named these legends to
Gennell, the elder miraculously produced fallen stars from his pack, and
bade them deliver the stars to the legend-knowers. When they did, the
fallen stars spurred their memories and the full legends were recited
and heard.

Ryntha Jade was the first to place one of the fallen stars in the
shimmering pool behind Hycanthus' mountain abode. When she did, the
legend told in the star's presence took physical form and the pool flung
several stars into the heavens, where they took the shape of the
constellation Sekhtet. Kaga the Fallen was next, raising Alysida into
the sky, while the Ard-Dhasani Karim was responsible for the elevation
of both Treyes and Verdantia.

Following the trail of hints and rumors, other legends were unearthed by
speaking to Titania and Torei, to Vormav and Halitherses. Each of these
told their tales aloud once brought the fallen stars given out by
Gennell and these stars were delivered to the pool in the Vashnars as
well. Ryntha raised a second constellation, Sukula, into the sky by her
efforts, but Kiyotan McCloud proved most prolific of all by discovering
four legends and elevating a quartet of constellations into the
firmament.

When all this had been accomplished, Gennell journeyed to the temple of
the Muse for one last tale. None the worse for his intake of drink, he
spoke of the origins of Celesmas, a story that had been told last nearly
a century ago. As he finished the legend, he described how Varian the
Creator had raised the Midnight Star into the sky as a sign that He
watched ever over the sentient ones He had created. With a flash of
light, that star, Celessuran, appeared in the sky along with the dozen
constellations of the new Mejevsavelnel and dozens more besides.

Gennell proclaimed the beginning of another Celesmas and, as the crowd
celebrated and thanked the elder for his stories and direction, he took
his leave with a sly smile. With a last bow of his head, he disappeared
in a burst of light and sound, leaving all to wonder about the true
identity of this arcane and powerful elder. The light of Celessuran
shone for a year in the night skies of Aetolia, as mortals gazed in awe
at the newly-filled heavens and the benevolent star-sign of the
Celestine.

Penned by my hand on the 10th of Lanosian, in the year 157 MA.
