The End of the Cabal

The modern Cabal was founded in Severin, year 107 of the Midnight Age, based upon rediscovered Ankyrean texts, the symbols of Numerology, and the tutelage of its founder, Eocik, an ex-farmer. Prying into the secrets of reality, the guild shrouded itself in mystery, increasing its knowledge and determining its purpose. In its early years, the Cabal was most strongly divided between two factions: the Necromancers and the Numerologists. Broadly, the Necromancers favored conflict, while the Numerologists favored the ideal of knowledge and gave rise to the common saying: "Knowledge is power."

Control of the guild and its direction passed, frequently, between the Necromancers and Numerologists. In time, influenced by scholars such as Ezrax, Eleanor, and Akaryuterra, the latter faction claimed decisive victory, and the guild turned inward, away from the world at large. The Cabalists delved deeper and deeper into Numerology's secrets, employing it in their quest to acquire knowledge and develop more potent methods for altering reality.

In Slyphian, year 463 MA, Eocik came to a final decision. Alarmed by the extent to which Numerologists had developed their powers, and recognizing a dire, apocalyptic threat to reality from within the ranks of the Cabal itself, he destroyed the guild, lamenting his role in forming it and condemning his former pupils for their arrogance. Many of the former Cabalists now rally behind the Stormcaller Research Society, continuing to practice the forbidden art of Numerology. In the void left by the Cabalists, the city of Spinesreach seeks a new purpose for its wayward scholars.

Penned by my hand on Gosday, the 5th of Arios, in the year 464 MA.
